Therapy Provision
The therapy department consists of a team of speech and language therapists (SLTs) and occupational therapists (OTs).
Our aim is to develop and enhance our students’ skills and their use of strategies, in order to enable them to become more independent learners, who can use their skills in a range of settings.
Therapy at KHS is included in the school fees. The level of input is related to what is specified in the student’s EHCP and clinical decisions from assessment.
There are three levels of therapy at KHS: universal/targeted and specialist.
Universal/targeted: Irrespective of EHCP provision, all students access universal/targeted SLT and OT support. This includes the therapists providing general staff training, and general and student specific advice regarding strategies and classroom adaptations.
All students access timetabled class based sessions led by the therapy team e.g. touch typing, Word Aware, study skills and Preparation for Leaving.
The Therapy team work alongside classroom teachers and learning support assistants (LSAs) as part of a multi-disciplinary approach to teaching.
Specialist: In addition to universal/targeted class based groups, therapy takes place in 1:1, paired and small group sessions and via in class support. This may be weekly input or through blocks of therapy with periods of consolidation.
Students have a designated key therapist (SLT/OT) for the academic year. The key therapist/s will manage the therapy package of care, which includes carrying out assessments (formal/ informal- as appropriate), coordinating therapy sessions and targets, contributing to the annual review process (writing a report and attending the meeting), contributing to parents’ evenings, and liaising with staff.
