Outdoor learning
The safest place for ships is in the harbour!
But that's not what ships were built for!
The ethos of outdoor learning underpins our academic success and wellbeing. At Knowl Hill School, we place great regard in the development of transferable skills. There is no better place to refine these qualities than in well focused outdoor learning opportunities.
A great many learning opportunities take place in our local operating area and the risks and measures are part of our standard operating procedures. All staff working beyond the classroom are trained annually to work safely in this area in accordance with best practice.
Outdoor learning experiences beyond our local operating area, that are not regularly occurring events are all processed rigorously through the Evolve system. Parents are informed either by letter or email prior to these events.
Our aim is to introduce all of our students to the wonders of outdoor learning through Forest School, and then build on this experience through a series of residential opportunities. Our program begins in the Lower school, where the Alpha and Gamma sets embark on their first residential experience at Tile Barn.
Beyond the Lower school in Pi and Sigma we offer a 3-day Bushcraft residential in North Yorkshire, where the students become immersed in nature; engaged in new activities; developing their personal skills and making memories. Finally, for the senior students comprising Sigma, Tau and Omega, we embark on a three-year rolling program of exciting cultural residential trips.
